Bumps and Lumps:
The Benefits of early detection.

Many patients experience unusual changes in the mouth, teeth, gums, tongue, or throat that may be caused by disease. Oftentimes these are harmless. However, any lump, bump or sore that does not disappear within 10 days should be examined to confirm that they aren’t anything concerning. Diagnosing diseases in the mouth as early as possible is very important. The earlier a disease is diagnosed, the faster treatment and healing can begin.

At True-Bite, our experienced doctors thoroughly evaluate the tissue within the mouth looking for areas of concern. If any irregularity is observed, a biopsy (tissue removal) is performed to determine a diagnosis as the sample is sent to a laboratory for analysis.

Symptoms to watch:

  • Red or white lesions or patches.
  • Raised or thickened areas of tissue.
  • Presence of lumps and masses.
  • Sores that bleed easily or fail to heal.
  • Persistent sore throat or hoarseness.
  • Chewing or swallowing difficulties.
  • Changes in tissue texture or appearance.

What are the most common risk factors for oral cancer?

  • Tobacco use of any kind (cigarettes, cigars, pipes, chewing tobacco and snuff, among others).
  • Heavy alcohol use.
  • Male gender, 55 and older.
  • UV exposure.
  • Genetics.
  • Previous oral cancer diagnosis.

A healthy mouth is crucial to a healthy body. The best way to protect oral health is through healthy lifestyle habits and good oral hygiene: avoid all forms of tobacco, decrease alcohol use, avoid risks factors for HPV, use a lip balm with SPF, and see your dentist regularly.
